Naziv Plavinci nastao je krajem XIX veka kada je ceo ovaj kraj bio pod vinogradima. Mornari koji su u zoru plovili Dunavom uzvodno, gledali su kako se ovi brežuljci presijavaju u indigo-plavoj boji, od Plavog kamena kojim su tada prskani vinogradi, pa ga nazvaše Plavinci.
